🚰 Overview
Dynamic Valve Types give admin users more control over the Valve Type catalog in the backend. Instead of using a fixed list of valve types, admins can customize the catalog to better match the terminology used by their company and AHJs.
Admins can add new valve types and subtypes, rename existing types, reorder the list, and deactivate types that are not used.
Important: Dynamic Valve Types are available as of October 2026. For existing Inspect Point customers using sprinkler inspections, this feature must first be enabled by Inspect Point. Once enabled, admin users can manage valve types and subtypes from the backend settings.
⚙️ How Dynamic Valve Types Work
When Dynamic Valve Types are enabled, your Valve Type catalog is pre-loaded with the default valve types and subtypes from the previous built-in list. This means you do not need to recreate your existing valve setup.
Each valve type includes the following details:
- Name — The name displayed throughout Inspect Point.
- Category — Identifies the type of valve: Control Valve, Drain Valve, or Inspector's Test Valve (ITV).
- Classification — Determines which inspection questions apply to the valve.
- Subtype — Provides an additional level of detail for the valve type.
Rather than using the same generic set of questions for every valve, Inspect Point uses the valve's classification to determine the appropriate questions during an inspection.
🗂️ How Valve Classification Works
With Dynamic Valve Types, each valve type — whether pre-loaded or user-added — is associated with an underlying classification: Control, System, Check, Regulating, Drain, or Test.
When a technician inspects a valve, Inspect Point uses its classification to determine how the valve should be evaluated and which inspection questions apply.
This allows different types of valves to receive questions relevant to their function. For example, a check valve won't be asked whether it was exercised, and a stemless valve won't be asked about stem lubrication. This helps reduce human-error, unnecessary N/A responses, and ensures technicians are presented with the appropriate NFPA 25-aligned questions for the valve being inspected.
📋 Getting Started
Dynamic Valve Types must first be enabled by a member of the Inspect Point team. If you're interested in enabling this feature, email support@inspectpoint.com with the subject line Dynamic Valve Types.
Once enabled, admin users can begin managing the Valve Type catalog in the backend, including:
- Adding valve types and subtypes
- Renaming existing valve types
- Reordering valve types
- Deactivating valve types that are no longer needed
💡 Good to Know
- Inspection question logic is automatic based on the valve's classification. Technicians do not need to select or configure a question set.
- Dynamic Valve Types are available on the web and iOS version 10.7.0 or later.
- Valve inspection questions are NFPA 25-aligned and managed by Inspect Point. Custom question authoring is not available at this time.
✅ Requirements
- You must have an admin role in Inspect Point to access and edit the valve catalog in Settings
Valve Type catalog management is available on the web only. Valve types and subtypes cannot be configured from the mobile app.
- Technicians must be using Inspect Point iOS version 10.7.0 or later to use Dynamic Valve Types & Subtypes.
- Technicians using an earlier version of the app will only have access to the original default valve types. Custom valve types configured by an admin will not be available until the app is updated.
